He has been instrumental in the development of digitizing standard work documents, digital twins of assembly processes and the strategic use of manufacturing execution systems to refine and innovate manufacturing workflows. A graduate of the University of South Carolina-Upstate with a bachelor’s in engineering technology management, and holding a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Clemson University, Trent is the Engineering Manager at BorgWarner. Can you share your journey so far and your current roles and responsibilities in the organization?

My tenure at BorgWarner has been marked by distinct phases. Initially, I was tasked with ‘clean-up mode,’ a literal term as I joined following a tornado that had significantly damaged our plant. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, I focused on enhancing machine availability, improving first pass yield, and reducing scrap. As our performance indicators began to improve, I transitioned into the ‘improvement phase,’ which involved automating labor-intensive operations, refining data reporting, and addressing systemic process failures.

Now, in the ‘sustain and advancement phase,’ my efforts are geared towards maintaining the robust processes we’ve established, optimizing our technologies to maximize sustainability, and employing advanced technologies to create a more profound impact on our business performance.

What are the prevailing challenges you as a leader face today regarding technology trends?

Integration with Existing Systems: The integration of cutting-edge technologies with established legacy systems is a multifaceted challenge that not only requires meticulous planning but also strategic execution as to not interrupt operations. This process must be approached with a nuanced understanding of the existing technological framework to ensure that the introduction of new systems complements rather than disrupts the current operations. It requires a delicate balance between innovation and continuity, ensuring that the new technology seamlessly interfaces with the old, thereby preserving operational integrity while enhancing overall functionality.

We aim to design and manufacture the latest systems to the full extent for a seamless operation. Our collaboration with technologists, engineers and OEMs leads us to success by facilitating transformation toward emobility.

Cost Management: From a financial perspective, the management of costs associated with the adoption of new technologies is a perpetual balancing act. It involves a thorough analysis of the initial investment against the projected long-term benefits. The goal is to achieve a favorable return on investment that justifies the expenditure. This necessitates a forward-thinking approach to budgeting, where the potential for future savings and efficiencies is weighed against the upfront costs. It’s a strategic decision-making process that requires myself and others in leadership roles to forecast future market trends and calculate the financial impact of technological upgrades.

Sustainability: When considering sustainability, the focus extends beyond the immediate environmental impact to the enduring relevance of the technology. It’s about making choices that are not only eco-friendly but also economically viable over a span of 5, 10, or even 15 years. This foresight ensures that the technology adopted today will continue to meet the evolving needs of the business and remain compatible with future innovations. It’s a commitment to choosing solutions that are designed to last, reducing the need for frequent replacements, and minimizing waste, thereby contributing to a more sustainable future.

When it comes to the future of the space, where do you see the industry going next? Do you expect any technological trends that might disrupt the space as a whole?

I see a significant shift towards electrification and other advanced powertrains. There are significant advancements in battery technology, with manufacturers pouring resources into research and development to enhance battery performance. This encompasses efforts to increase energy density, cut down charging times, and prolong battery life. Moreover, the expansion of charging infrastructure is keeping pace with the increasing adoption of EVs. In essence, the move towards electrification and the adoption of advanced powertrains in the automotive sector marks a significant leap in addressing the preferences of contemporary consumers and environmental issues. This trend is expected to maintain its upward trajectory as technological innovations continue and societal attitudes towards sustainability progress.

Simultaneously, automation and robotics are rapidly becoming integral components of modern manufacturing processes, heralding a new era of efficiency and costeffectiveness. The integration of robotics into production lines is particularly transformative, offering unparalleled precision and consistency in manufacturing tasks. This technological evolution is not just about replacing manual labor; it’s about augmenting human capabilities with machines that can operate tirelessly, with exacting accuracy, and without the risk of injury. This innovative technology enables the creation of more complex designs and the rapid prototyping of parts, which can significantly streamline the production process. By allowing for on-demand manufacturing, it reduces the need for large inventories, cutting down on storage costs and waste. Furthermore, 3D printing facilitates in-house design and production capabilities, particularly useful for creating custom-built parts necessary for the repair and maintenance of manufacturing equipment. This shift towards additive manufacturing not only enhances operational efficiency but also supports customization and sustainability efforts within the industry. Significant changes in this industry are happening now and will continue to happen in the coming years. To effectively manage change within an organization, it is essential to be flexible and adaptable, focusing on the triad of people, processes, and technology. The goal is to foster unity among all stakeholders, ranging from end users and support personnel to decision makers, ensuring that everyone is aligned and moving in the same direction. It’s critical to accurately identify the core issues before attempting to devise solutions. Moreover, financial viability remains paramount; hence, balancing technological advancements with financial outcomes is crucial. This necessitates conducting comprehensive Return on Investment (ROI) studies to ensure that the pursuit of innovation does not compromise the organization’s financial health, adhering to the principle that cash is king.
